DAYS BETWEEN
AUGUST 2024
UPDATED 8/08/2024
The dog days of summer are closing out on us, but there is still plenty of fishing to be had on the Madison River. Much needed rain and cooler weather is making its way through the valley which should bring down water temperatures throughout the river system. Hebgen cut back on the reservoir outflow on August 5th from 1080 CFS down to 965 CFS. The river is starting to get boney close here to town with the Varney gauge reading at 1240 CFS. There is still ample water to float, be sure to choose your line wisely unless you want to get out and push.
The fishing has remained consistent over the last week. Nymphing loyalists are finding success with Pat’s Rubber Legs, Hare’s Ears, Pheasant Tails and Lightning Bugs during the course of the day. The streamer fishing has picked up with the recent drop in water temperatures. Most of my success has been on smaller sculpin imitations. Dry Flies continue to produce for the anglers looking for a great fish to come up and eat their bug. Hoppers, small attractor patterns and nocturnal stones have been my go-to for throwing dries.
As always our shop in downtown Ennis is stocked to the brim with flies so don't be afraid to swing by and check them out for yourself. Also feel free to swing by the shop for a more in-depth and up to date fishing report or general fishing advice. Just a reminder as well it is now barbless hooks only from Varney bridge to the Lake so pinch those barbs. Enjoy the warm weather this weekend and be safe out there!
