Just back from a quick lunch time Varney to Valley Upper Madison boat ramp tour and wanted to post this update.
Due to the lack of prolonged and extreme cold, the gorge didn’t make it very far up the river this winter….yet...and it seems likely that it won’t at this point. But who knows. For now anyway, the river from Varney to town is floatable and fishable on warmer days when it’s not slushy.
Varney Bridge - The road in and the site are very passable with not much snow or ice to speak of. The boat ramp does have drifted snow, but not much and it’s evident that someone launched a boat there within the past few days. If you want to play it safe and be sure to not get stuck on the ramp, just unload the boat and slide it down the snow-covered ramp.
8 Mile Ford - The site and the ramp are clear.
Burnt Tree Hole - This site and ramp are clear.
Ennis - The site and ramp are clear
Valley Garden - We wouldn’t suggest attempting to use this site or ramp yet. There is at least a foot of snow on the road in, and it was so tough that we didn’t even make it to the ramp. Walking in to wade fish is probably fine, but don’t plan on using the boat ramp.
