Madison River Fishing Report - April 27, 2019

We are currently in the sweet spot between winter and runoff. A brief period otherwise sometimes locally known as “spring”.  Spring rocks on the Madison and many other area rivers. It really is one of the very best times of the whole year to fly fish Montana. Hurry up and get out there!

Fishing (and catching) on the Madison has been great for the past month, and the next few days look very promising with the forecast calling for much cooler temperatures. We have had some preliminary, low-elevation runoff in the norther Rockies lately and most rivers have bumped up somewhat and are running off color. No big deal on the Madison though, and in fact, I could make an argument that these are the very best conditions to fly fish this river. The most effective tactic is gonna be indicator nymphing most of the time, but the next couple of days/weeks are also gonna present some great dry fly and streamer fishing opportunities. Baetis are hatching on the Upper and Lower Madison most afternoons, with the best hatches on cloudy afternoons. We are also on the cusp on the legendary “Mother’s Day Caddis Hatch!” While not a sure thing by any stretch… If you hit the right time and place over the next few weeks, you could have some dry fly action that you will remember the rest of your life!! One thing is for sure…you won’t know unless you go!!!

Boat Ramps: Almost all boat ramps on the Upper and Lower Madison are open except for the Ennis Town FAS. Valley Garden FAS is indeed open and looking good. Ennis should be open soon, but still has some significant ice blockage on the road. Call us anytime for the most up to date info.
