Fishing Report - Hoot Owl Closures

The warm weather we have experienced recently, combined wit this season's below average snowpack has led Montana FWP to place "Hoot Owl" closures on many S.W. Montana Trout Streams.  This means that they are closed to angling from 2 p.m. until midnight each day until conditions improve. In order to lift the restrictions, FWP will need to see the daily high water temperature stay below a certain level for several consecutive days along with a cooler weather forecast, which we currently have. So stay tuned....

The Lower Madison is under Hoot Owl restrictions, however the Upper Madison IS NOT! In fact, we have not seen any Hoot Owl restrictions on the Upper Madison in 20 years. And the Upper river continues to fish well. Just be prepared for a few more people than normal as area restrictions and muddy water on the Yellowstone continue to push more anglers over this way.

Water flows are great on the Upper Madison and we have been seeing good action lately on dries, nymphs and streamers. Stop in the shop for more information on hatches and fly patterns.

Below is a list of current restrictions and closures to Montana waterbodies. Many factors such as drought and fire may lead to a waterbody being closed for fishing on a temporary basis. For a statewide view of closures, view the Fishing Closures map.
